The India Meteorological Department has said the low-pressure area that lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka coast with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric levels, is likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours.
It will move northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts until the morning of Saturday, November 12, 2022. Thereafter, it will move west-northwestwards across Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and Kerala on November 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday) and is likely to emerge into the southeast & adjoining east-central Arabian Sea as a low-pressure area.
Around November 14, there is the possibility of its intensification into a well marked low-pressure area/depression, while moving northwestwards
According to the latest forecast issued at 7 a.m. on Friday, moderate to light rain with thunderstorms are predicted across Tamil Nadu. Various schools and colleges in several districts have declared holidays owing to the weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for following low-pressure areas:
Heavy rainfall warning: Fairly widespread/widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Rayalaseema and south coastal Andhra Pradesh during November 11 -13 and isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala & Mahe on November 11 to 15 and over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on Novmber 14th & 15.
Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on November 11 and over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 12
Wind warning: On November 10 & 11, squally weather (wind speed 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph) is likely to prevail over the southwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, along & off south Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and Sri Lanka coasts, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining theComorin area.
November 12: Squally weather (wind speed 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph) is likely to prevail over the Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, southwest & west-central Bay of Bengal, along & off south Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and Sri Lanka coasts.
November 13 & 14: Squally weather (wind speed 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph) is likely over Lakshadweep area, Maldives-Comorin area, southeast Arabian Sea and along & off Kerala & adjoining south Tamil Nadu coasts.
Fishermen are advised not to venture in to these areas during these periods.

According to IMD’s update at 10:39 a.m., moderate rains expected in the city’s sub-urban areas – Kundrathur, Tambaram and Vandalur in the next three hours.

Chennai Corporation readies shelters
The Greater Chennai Corporation has made arrangements for improving preparedness for rain-related issues, across the 15 zones of the city.
Officials have been directed to keep relief shelters open in the event of flooding in-low lying areas near water bodies. The Corporation has opened 169 relief centres to help residents in the event of evacuation from the residential neighborhoods.

Some districts have declared holidays only for schools. Tiruppatur declared a holiday only for primary and middle school, while Dindigul district announced a holiday only for schools owing to the heavy rains. A holiday was also declared for Madurai, Ramanathapuram and Theni districts.

The Union Territory administration has declared holiday for schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Friday and Saturday due to rain.

Chennai city and many districts in northern and central Tamil Nadu received heavy rains through the night on Thursday and continued on Friday, due to low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. The Chennai district Collector declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Friday
At 7 a.m. the RMC Now Cast said that moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning was likely to occur.

Residents of localities in Dhanalakshmi Nagar Iyappanthangal area continued to remain inundated from the recent rains.

Residents have started using boats to ferry school children across flooded roads of Iyyappanthangal and Moulivakkam panchayats, both prominent suburbs of the city.
Over 5,000 families in areas such as Dhanalakshmi Nagar, Sai Nagar and Ponniamman Nagar, all of which fall under Kancheepuram district, have complained about persistent flooding of roads after the onset of the northeast monsoon this year.
